Computer savvy friends?

I am turning to you, my friends list, a great deal this week, aren't I?
I'm having an odd problem with Boromir (the laptop formerly known as Frodo). He's taken to randomly using up all the memory, even when I'm doing things that have formerly been undemanding. For instance, running Firefox and VLC media player at the same time never used to be a problem. Suddenly now the computer starts dragging, the DVDs will be jerky, and if I open the Task Manager and look at the performance graph, I'll see that the CPU Usage is at 100%
This is ridiculous, as I'm running with 1.25 G of RAM, and Windows XP doesn't require nearly that much. I have something like 12G free on my hard drive, so it isn't lack of virtual memory. I've tweaked the virtual memory limits to give myself more virtual memory, too. I've run my OneCare antivirus scan, I've defragged, I haven't run Spy-bot and Ad-aware yet, but so far I can't find anything that could be causing this.
I used to be able to run Photoshop, Word, Firefox, Trillian, Y!M, and iTunes, all at the same time, with no difficulties. Why is it suddenly becoming a chore?
