I was alone in the lunchroom for a while today, so I took the opportunity to turn off the TV and enjoy the silence. Another lady came in and we didn't talk. And then someone came in and said, "it's so quiet!" And then proceeded to KEEP making that observation every other minute. I finally left early because I was abouit to burst out with, "Yes, it WAS quiet until YOU got here!". And she's someone who would have cried if I said that (really) so I thought it better to leave entirely.

Ugh, unacceptable. Why, why, why are people so annoying. It was quiet in my lunchroom today as well. Its the first time in 2 days I have actually eaten in there and it was nice. Z was dozing off and I was writing my story for [livejournal.com profile] bau_bigbang and eating the most delicious barbecue chicken that I managed to keep from getting on my pink shirt.

Mine is v-neck too and I love the colors Emily wears, I emulate them as well. Well, I always liked them but I noticed when I shop now I do pay more attention than I ever used to. I used to be a person who bought clothes to cover myself...its a lot different now.

I hate it when others make it impossible to enjoy a companionable silence. She may be one of those people that just can't handle any type of silence, or constantly feels compelled to talk, just to fill the void. I like to think that those types of people just can't "be alone with themselves" and don't like to listen to their own thoughts.

My advice would be, next time, because there will probably be a next time, to reply to said observation with something akin to, "We're just taking a break from the noise for a bit."

Or something that gets the point across but is the typical polite small talk corny joke type thing that gets thrown around offices a lot.

GRAH!!

I sit next to Repeatedly State The Obvious Lady at work, so I can completely commiserate. Seriously.

Two days ago a girl came to her desk and asked her something. She said, "I don't know why I did that. I guess I was grumpy that day. I must have been grumpy.

The girl nodded and left (she's extremely busy). She was out of the row, and RSTOL said, "I just was grumpy that day. I must have been grumpy."

The girl was across the room and RSTOL repeated, "I really must have just been grumpy that day. I think I was just feeling grumpy."

WTF. SHE CAN'T EVEN HEAR YOU.

She makes me crazy.

She would have done EXACTLY the same thing in the lunch room. Grah, I tell you, grah!

Yes! I hate it when that happens! I've been in breakrooms where people will talk to themselves rather than simply appreciate the relative solitude.

I think some people are just afraid of quiet, or at least unsettled by it.

The noisy person makes me think of a Dilbert cartoon I have taped to my comp monitor at the school--I can't find it online, and it's from my desk calendar a couple years ago.

They're at a staff meeting discussing the new payroll and the guy sitting next to Alice won't stfu. She tells him a couple times to shush. He finally says that he can't be quiet, because if he doesn't talk, it feels like his head will explode. Alice says, "Let's test that theory," and clamps her hand over his mouth. His head does explode and she says, "That worked out better than I thought." *hee*

found it
