Argh!  So in my computer crash I lost the last half of Season Five of CM, right?  And at the moment I don't have time to go hunting for online eps etc.  So could someone who has "Public Enemy" do me a big favor and give me a screencap of Rossi's check at the end of the episode?  Or at least comment with his address (city mostly)?  I would have sworn I wrote it down somewhere, but I can't find it.

Thanks, flist! :)

So I am 99% finished with a David Rossi fanmix...but I have this problematic song.

It's called "Ruby Ridge" by Johnny Philko, and we all know Rossi was calling the shots at Ruby Ridge. This is the sort of song that Rossi would fucking hate, but at the same time he would probably listen to it over and over to torture himself. (Come on, we've seen him with that darn bracelet!)

Ruby Ridge has been a big part of Rossi's life--it made him start thinking about leaving the FBI, and it's come back to haunt him twice now in the two years he's been back. So...there's actually a song out there about Ruby Ridge, and I wanted to put it in the mix.

The problem is threefold: I hate 99% of all war protest songs*, the guy's voice fluctuates between annoying-as-hell and oddly-interesting, and the song itself isn't really the best (despite being somewhat catchy in a very annoying sort of way). But not everyone hates war protest songs, and there are lots of people who love Dylan while I find his voice annoying most of the time, so maybe people will like Johnny Philko.

So...What do I do with this song?

[Poll #1402056]

* "99 Luftballons" is not included in this. Nor, oddly, is "War".

Announcing [livejournal.com profile] ssa_rossi

David Rossi lovers, unite! [livejournal.com profile] severity_softly and [livejournal.com profile] innerslytherin are excited to announce the opening of a community entirely dedicated to adoring SSA David Rossi. Feel free to post anything you'd like about him here, fic, art, icons, episode and/or general discussion, canon, fanmixes, fanvids, etc. Slash, het, and gen are all welcome.

We'll be running monthly challenges, and our first one is the SSA Rossi 'Backstory Drabble/Ficlet' Challenge! For our first challenge, we don't want to get too ambitious, so we're asking people to write 100-500 words of backstory for David Rossi. It can be about any period of his history that you want. And don't forget--poems, graphics, and other contributions can also be part of the challenge! The challenge will end at midnight on April 30.

Come join us and have fun!

Just posting here some canon reference on Dave Rossi, so I'll be able to find it later.

Emily calls him a "fussy, anal-retentive neat freak" in "Damaged".
+ Blue pen - evidentiary items
+ Red pen - supposition and theory

After the Galen case he's never been able to put up a Christmas tree. ("Damaged")

Dave gave a seminar at the FBI Academy in 1997 - Collateral Materials on Sex Crimes. His first book was just out. ("Limelight")

Dave teaches interrogation at the FBI Academy. ("Masterpiece")

first book ch 3 p 89 - "The first time I saw one of William Grace's victims, I knew I was looking at the residue of pure evil. I knew I would never again feel completely safe around a human being." ("Masterpiece")

fifth book ch 13 p 144 - "I know it makes little sense to try to deter violence with more violence. But deterrance is not why I believe in the death penalty. There are some people that are so violent, so evil, that society has no choice but to be done with them. Vengeance is something that society needs from time to time, if for no other purpose than to keep the rest of us sane." ("Masterpiece")

"Dahmer, Lake and Ng, DeBardeleben, Berdella, and others--At the core of these criminals is a need for control. Killing was an act that provided a release so sexually satisfying that they were compelled to repeat the fantasy with multiple victims again and again. It is this continuum of violence that we will explore in Deviance: The Secret Desires of Sadistic Serial Killers." - 10th anniversary edition out in 2009, so not his first book. ("Zoe's Reprise")

Mostly for my own reference:

From "Masterpiece"

Dave's first book ch 3 p 89
"The first time I saw one of William Grace's victims, I knew I was looking at the residue of pure evil. I knew I would never again feel completely safe around a human being."

Dave's fifth book ch 13 p 144

Posted this originally in a comment at [livejournal.com profile] severity_softly's, but I'm interested in more general discussion here. ETA: I should specify that I'm talking fanon here, because I'm sure that in canon Rossi is heterosexual. /ETA

Okay, my personal canon for Rossi is based largely on form FBI profiler John Douglas, simply because there's no doubt in my mind that's who Rossi's character is based on. *G* So I'm thinking G-man from the get-go, straight outta college, probably around 1978, based on his age.

[livejournal.com profile] darkhawkhealer brought up the topic of Rossi as Catholic, and how that initially impacted her reading of Rossi-slash. Of course, the official Catholic position is that homosexual acts are a sin, but that identifying as homosexual is not, as long as you don't indulge in the acts. That is, if you remain celibate, it doesn't matter which sex you are attracted to. I can respect that opinion, certainly, and I think it probably informs Dave Rossi's character, or did at one time, at least.

Obviously all you CM people know I love writing Rossi-slash. I've never dealt with the concept of faith in the fics I've written, largely because I think he didn't suddenly turn gay when he climbed over the hill. That is, his character has done some changing since he joined the show, but the essentials of who he is were basically set a good thirty years ago, canon-wise.

I do think that at some point in the past he's had a crisis of faith or something regarding having sex with men and his faith. Because I have no doubt that he's still very firm in his beliefs. But then there are a lot of interpretations of the Bible, and I can see Rossi having come to terms with this after a lot of soul-searching. Not to mention he's educated in psychology, and homosexuality was taken out of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, so I can see this being something he's accepted.

ETA: This is why I don't often write meta--I always think of things I want to add after the fact. There is also his conversations with Morgan re: faith to consider. He's intrigued by Morgan's issues with the priest in "Lucky". His asking Morgan, at the end of "Penelope", I think, about the status of his faith, is one that sticks with me (as well as Morgan's "day to day" answer). /ETA

Then again, if you want to write Rossi/Prentiss or Rossi/JJ (or Rossi/Garcia? I'd so squee to see that!) and view Rossi as a 100% straight man who personally views homosexuality as a sin but doesn't judge based on that or let that belief affect his profile, I can totally buy into that reading of his character, too.

Thoughts?
