ETA: I should specify that I'm talking fanon here, because I'm sure that in canon Rossi is heterosexual.
/ETAOkay, my personal canon for Rossi is based largely on form FBI profiler John Douglas, simply because there's no doubt in my mind that's who Rossi's character is based on. *G* So I'm thinking G-man from the get-go, straight outta college, probably around 1978, based on his age.
darkhawkhealer brought up the topic of Rossi as Catholic, and how that initially impacted her reading of Rossi-slash. Of course, the official Catholic position is that homosexual acts are a sin, but that identifying as homosexual is not, as long as you don't indulge in the acts. That is, if you remain celibate, it doesn't matter which sex you are attracted to. I can respect that opinion, certainly, and I think it probably informs Dave Rossi's character, or did at one time, at least.
Obviously all you CM people know I love writing Rossi-slash. I've never dealt with the concept of faith in the fics I've written, largely because I think he didn't suddenly turn gay when he climbed over the hill. That is, his character has done some changing since he joined the show, but the essentials of who he is were basically set a good thirty years ago, canon-wise.
I do think that at some point in the past he's had a crisis of faith or something regarding having sex with men and his faith. Because I have no doubt that he's still very firm in his beliefs. But then there are a lot of interpretations of the Bible, and I can see Rossi having come to terms with this after a lot of soul-searching. Not to mention he's educated in psychology, and homosexuality was taken out of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, so I can see this being something he's accepted.
ETA: This is why I don't often write meta--I always think of things I want to add after the fact. There is also his conversations with Morgan re: faith to consider. He's intrigued by Morgan's issues with the priest in "Lucky". His asking Morgan, at the end of "Penelope", I think, about the status of his faith, is one that sticks with me (as well as Morgan's "day to day" answer).
/ETAThen again, if you want to write Rossi/Prentiss or Rossi/JJ (or Rossi/Garcia? I'd so squee to see that!) and view Rossi as a 100% straight man who personally views homosexuality as a sin but doesn't judge based on that or let that belief affect his profile, I can totally buy into that reading of his character, too.
Thoughts?
