I loved that bit, too! I knew when it happened that it just HAD to be Edmund who'd done it. Mmmm.
I usually do get annoyed by invention in historical or literary interpretations, but I could see the reasoning for the ones I noticed in this movie, and none of them reeked of character assassination a-la Peter Jackson's treatment of Faramir. *grin*
