LJ Strikethrough '07 continues

...in a completely insidious manner. Now they're picking people off one by one.
As a permanent account holder on LiveJournal who came here in 2002 strictly for fandom purposes, I am deeply disappointed in the way 6Apart is handling supposed infractions of the ToS. Would 6Apart people like to censor all Young Adult novels in which "underage" sexual situations are depicted? Would 6Apart like to erase from our collective memories the storyline in Dawson's Creek that involved a student sleeping with a teacher, or a similar one from Boston Public? Would 6Apart like to ignore the fact that teenagers do have sex? What's next, 6A? Suspending 15-year-old LJ members because they post about their sex lives?
This is ridiculous. Words cannot express my disappointment in 6Apart. I have let two other paid LJ accounts lapse because of this, and I am not intending to renew until this persecution of fandom on LJ ceases.

Ponderosa121 has been suspended.
Elaboration has been suspended, just shortly after an anonymous person DONATED to her a PERMANENT ACCOUNT.
bookshop's journal is the place to go for more complete information.
More info from Liz-marcs.
ETA: Go read lore's post about this too, please.
elke_tanzer also has a VERY useful post about emergency measures.
florahart is taking opinions and discussion about migrating fandom off LJ.
fandom_counts was created during the initial strike of Strikethrough, and I joined it then, though I'm honestly not sure how much good that will do.
I don't want to leave LJ. I'll be completely honest here. I like it here, I'm used to it, and I've been here for almost five years, dammit. But if I have to leave LJ, I want all of fandom to go TO THE SAME PLACE. I want someone to take the open source coding of LJ and use it to make a fandom journaling site. (No, let's not talk about JournalFen because first of all I don't want to go back to invite codes, secondly they don't have paid accounts right now, and thirdly I think "fen" is a snobby, pretentious term, there, I've said it.)
Woe.
ETA2: Something I forgot to mention - Live Journal Bans Users has been a SPONSORED LINK on Gmail RSS syndication for the past several weeks. Someone is paying money to make sure we don't forget about Strikethrough07...and they're going to have even more fodder now.
ETA3:
fandom_flies is a community about fandom migration.

Date: 2007-08-03 05:49 pm (UTC)While I really like it here, I mean I just got my page how I wanted it, I have no qualms about making my GJ page spiffy (right now it makes me think of Grimmauld Place).

Date: 2007-08-03 09:30 pm (UTC)When they made the posts, what, a couple weeks ago, about their new rules (i.e., the fiasco about US obscenity laws) some person commented to me that LJ was a place to blog about your thoughts on things and stuff going on in your life, not to write stuff, original or not. But, see, I disagree. Of course, it's called Livejournal, but there are SO many writers and artists on here. Tons. Every other person on LJ is a writer or an artist (how good they are is up for debate, but still...)
So, let's forget for a minute that it's using someone else's characters for the writing or art that they are going after. What, besides copyright, is different about someone doing that with totally original characters? What if that same picture that Ponderosa21 drew was drawn using the same bodies but totally original, made up by her faces instead of Harry and Snape? Would they STILL be TOSsing her? If they would, then this is very problematic. If they wouldn't, then they need to come out and say, "Hey, it's really the copyright infringement that we don't like." They are using this stupid, crazy anti-pedo website as a cover for getting rid of something. I don't know if what they want to get rid of is porn or copyright infringement, but either way, fan fic and fan art is the best place to start, no?
Like I said, I don't want to leave. But, dammit, they are seeming more and more dishonest and shifty all the time and I just plain don't like it.
By the way, that Harry/Snape picture does not violate any of their rules going by what they said in the whole obscenity fiasco. So, there is no other reason to get rid of it except they want to get rid of porn and/or fan fic because of copyright violations.

Date: 2007-08-03 10:41 pm (UTC)Also, journal is a word that can be used in many ways. My paper journals ALWAYS have snippets of stories, character sketches, quotes, etc., in them. An artist's paper journal is usually a sketchbook. So I think LiveJournal can be interpreted any way one wants. *grin*
