Sewing machine question

Okay, I know I have lots of sewing types on my flist. Any of you experienced with a "beginner's sewing machine"? I had one when I was 8, but that was some time ago, and I hardly remember it. One of my coworkers got one this year for Christmas (yes, she is like 40, she wants to learn how to sew) and can't get the bobbin thread connected right.

You know, the part where, on my sewing machine, I hold on to the needle thread and take one stitch, and it pulls the bobbin thread up? Yeah, hers isn't like that.

If anyone can give tips, I'll pass them on.
