This is just a snippet of a fic I started. I'm offering it in the Recycler Challenge for someone else in [livejournal.com profile] lupin_snape to finish.

Traitors

Lily has often wondered what brought Severus to their side.  She has often suspected it had something to do with Remus, but she was never sure until today.  Snape has never liked her, still does not like her—still treats her, in fact, as though she is inferior.  And yet today he has come to her…for comfort, she supposes, though for hers or his own, she cannot say.

He is pacing, and even this action seems tight, contained.  Lily rolls her eyes.  They are both stuck here, in this too-small room, and she cannot stand to watch him make one more circuit around the cobbled floor.

“Sit down, Snape!” she orders, her voice sharp.

“Don’t tell me what to do, M—Evans,” he snaps.

Mudblood, he’d meant to call her.  She knows this, and normally she doesn’t care, because he is, after all, helping keep her alive.  But even though he has saved her life today—or perhaps because of it—she cannot hold her tongue.  “Oh, just say it, Snape.  If you think I’ve got dirty blood, say it to my face.  Quit being so bloody polite!”

He grimaced.  “Right, and have L—your husband and his mates pound my face in.  That sounds pleasant.”

“Right now that isn’t likely.”  Lily’s voice is quieter suddenly. Because her husband and his friends are on the trail of a traitor.

It is at this moment Harry begins to cry.  It isn’t the usual loud, attention-demanding cry.  He utters a small hiccup, then begins to whimper.  The whimper becomes a thin, ragged noise, and Lily turns in sudden concern to pick him up.

Severus resumes his pacing as she cradles Harry, crooning wordlessly to him.  She worries, because Harry is a baby who lusts after life, who does everything with enthusiasm.  She wonders if he somehow realizes what has happened…or if he somehow was affected by Voldemort’s setback.

“I hope they don’t kill him,” Severus says abruptly, and his voice is ugly.  “I want to do that myself.”

Lily stares at him.  She believes what he has said.  She knows he would do it.  What she cannot understand is why.

“Why do you care so much?” she asks.  “It isn’t you he betrayed.  We’re the ones Voldemort is after.”

“Oh, didn’t he?” Snape snarls.  “Thanks to that betrayal, the Dark Lord knows I’m a spy!  Doubtless the other Death Eaters have already begun hunting me.”

Lily hadn’t thought of this, though of course she should have.  She sighs and walks the room again, bouncing Harry on her hip.  It is true that Remus’ betrayal has cost Severus his cover.  If Severus hadn’t been one of those chosen to go along on the execution, James and Lily and little Harry would all be dead now.  But Snape used Voldemort’s trust in him to stand next to the Potters…and he’d grabbed James’ wrist and put an arm around Lily (and by extension, Harry) and Apparated them to safety.  It had not been pleasant, and it had not been safe—but it was preferable to instant death.

And now Dumbledore and James have split the secret of their location between them, and James is Out There while Lily and Harry are In Here with Snape.

Harry’s whimpers have quieted, and when Lily looks down, she sees that he is watching Snape, back and forth, back and forth.

--
Why does Severus feel betrayed?  Because he and Remus are lovers, of course.  What really happened, obviously, is that Remus switched with Peter, who betrayed the Potters.  Remus and Peter are hunting each other, but of course everyone thinks Peter is innocent.  I have no idea where I was going with this, beyond that.
