Because
slashdays issued a challenge (whether she knew it or not):
"Remus?" It was a word whispered in the dark. Everyone else was asleep. He sat up.
"Whuzzat?"
"Are you awake?" It was Peter, and he looked very cold.
"I am now," Remus said, his voice kind. He was always kind to Peter, perhaps because Sirius and James could be so cruel, even to their friends. He sat up and tilted his head for Peter to climb up and pull the curtains shut. "What's wrong?"
Peter frowned. "I had a bad dream."
"Another one?"
Peter crawled up into the bed and leaned against Remus. He was shivering. Remus put an arm around him. "It was the same as last time. There was a man standing over me, and laughing, and I was in such awful pain. I would've told him anything to get the pain to stop..."
"Shh," Remus said, and he pressed his lips against Peter's temple. "Shh. You won't. You're stronger than that."
Peter turned his face towards him, the tears shining wetly on his cheeks. "Help me, Remus."
Remus' lips found Peter's, tenderly, imparting faith, imparting strength. "I will," he whispered. "I always will."
