Title: Watching
Pairing: Peter/Remus
Rating: G
WC: 544
Summary: The marauders have a lazy afternoon in seventh year.
Note: This was originally written about a month ago to cheer up [livejournal.com profile] severity_softly when she had a bad day. I just never remembered to post it.

In the sunlight, Remus seemed to have a halo. Peter was on his back in the grass with his eyes slitted, both because of the bright sun and because he didn't want the others to see him looking at Remus. They would accuse Peter of fancying him, without understanding anything.

They used to tease Peter about fancying Sirius, because he watched Sirius, but only Remus had ever seemed to realise Peter watched Sirius to learn how to move and how to talk. He wanted to be cool, smooth, funny. He wanted people to like him. People liked Sirius, so it was only logical to watch Sirius. Of course, Peter flubbed the punchlines of jokes more often than not, and he would never, ever be graceful enough to walk the way Sirius did. He'd moved on to James when he realised James was the one all the girls wanted--and that there were at least two blokes (one in Ravenclaw and one in Slytherin, of all places) who wanted James, too. So he tried to do his hair like James, and wear his school uniform carelessly like James. James looked as if he'd just won a fistfight with someone and come out only a bit mussed; Peter just looked perpetually rumpled.

Remus, though...Remus was different. Peter watched Remus not only because Remus was beautiful, but also because Remus was calm. Remus was a drink of cool water in the shade by a quiet brook. Remus was soothing peace. Remus made Peter feel comfortable just being himself.

And he's beautiful, Peter thought wryly. It was impossible to ignore that. Remus wouldn't ever think so, but Peter loved the way Remus chewed the cuff of his sleeve while he studied...the way those sleeves were just a little too short so that the bones of his wrist stuck out when he reached up to thrust his hair out of his eyes...the way Remus' hair always fell back down across his forehead as soon as he'd shoved it away, so that Remus was constantly fussing with it, but never cut it short.

In moments like this one, the four of them sprawled on the grass by the loch, ties open, collars unbuttoned, sleeves rolled up (and in Remus' case, socks taken off and folded neatly into his shoes so long, bare toes dug into the grass), Peter knew what it was like to be perfectly content. The light turned Remus' brown hair golden, picking out the silvery threads that were already showing up at his temples. It gilded his skin, shining along the paler scar tissue. It drew Peter's gaze down to the bare strip of stomach where Remus' shirt tail had come untucked.

Peter swallowed and licked his lips, closing his eyes all the way. Seventh year was nearly over, and he was going to have to do something about Remus soon, either work up the courage to say something or make himself forget this entirely...but there was time yet. He would wait until N.E.W.T.s were over, when they had a fortnight where they didn't have to worry about exams any longer, but didn't yet have to worry about the war. Then he would say something.

Until then, he would watch, basking in Remus' beauty instead of sunlight.

Aw, so heartwarming. You make me love the pairing so much...
