Blood

I said I needed to talk about giving blood, and then forgot. And today just needs to be over already, because everyone is chit-chatting and I'm not feeling productive and it's muggy in here and has been raining all freaking day. And I am cranky, in case you didn't get that. Anyway.

So last Wednesday I went to give blood. My iron was too low the last time I tried, so I had been taking vitamins, avoided caffeine all day, drank some red wine the night before...and my iron was fine, so I gave blood. I had warned them that my body didn't react well to losing that much blood, but did I think about that fact and try to just lie there for a bit? Of course not. Dumbass. As soon as I got up and went to get a drink, I started getting light-headed. No surprise there, so I went and laid back down, they put a fan on me, I couldn't feel my hands, it was worse than I ever remember it being.

Finally I got to the point where I was trying to decide if I could make it to the bathroom to pee, and realized I was about to throw up. So I lurched to the bathroom, and as soon as I got to the bathroom my vision blacked out, so I was fumbling for the light switch, and fortunately someone that worked there noticed that and came to help me. I sat on the floor for a minute, then crawled to the toilet and threw up a couple of times. Then I felt better, actually, so I went to the bathroom, then made my way back over to lie down.

Meanwhile my dad is totally oblivious to all this as he reads in the waiting area. Then again, blood bothers him, so I don't blame him for ignoring everything. Finally they took my vitals a couple times and deemed me all right to leave, so they walked me out to the car with Dad. Dad and I dropped off veggies on my best friend's porch. Then we got part of the way home and Dad had to pull over twice more for me to throw up. Ugh. I have NEVER thrown up after giving blood before. It was utterly miserable.

By the time we got home, I had a raging headache, so I crawled into bed with the laptop, thinking I could get online for a little while. But the internet was out. So I went to bed and slept until like noon Thursday. I called in sick because when I tried to get ready for work I was still light-headed and my head was killing me. I spent part of Friday being light-headed, too, even though I had tried to eat a lot on Thursday.

That's my story about blood donation. I don't think I'll do it again, because even though I've had lots of problems in the past, I've never thrown up with it before. And I don't want to throw up again.
