So depressed

So the tech guy came out today to fix my computer. He ended up having to take it with him because they didn't tell him what model it was and he didn't have some tool he needed. So he ended up calling me a couple times during the course of the evening. First he said that he'd replaced the motherboard and that didn't fix the problem. He asked if he could run the recovery discs. I said yeah, I'd backed up all my critical data. (I didn't wail about losing all my screencaps, wallpapers, icons, and banners until after I hung up.) The second time he called, he said that it was the video card I installed in February that was failing, and he was going to connect the motherboard to the preinstalled graphics card, and would probably ship the computer back tomorrow.

So why didn't I try switching back to the old video card?

I THOUGHT about it, you guys. I honestly considered it, then dismissed it because the display wasn't GONE, it was just getting tired. I thought it couldn't be the video card.

So instead of going with my hunch and trying it, I've lost all my screencaps and everything.

My writing is safe. I made a point to back that up before even trying to fix the computer. My music is on the external hard drive, so it's safe.

But my GRAPHICS! And I haven't been brave enough yet to hook the external hard drive up to the netbook and see if I've lost all of Season Five of CM yet. I record the show on my computer because that's where my TV signal comes in, but I can't remember if I saved it to the internal or external hard drive. I have a very bad feeling that it was all on the internal and I've lost season five until my DVDs get here. *cries*

If the unthinkable has happened and you lost season 5, you should be able to find them all online. That's how my sister and I have watched them. :)

Yeah, I know they're out there, but my recordings were from HDTV and the online things are tiny. Still, I always delete them as soon as I get my DVDs, so it's no biggie. And I had the season backed up through December, so I don't have too much to download. :)

Are you sure that all the data is lost? *frets* I know my computer's motherboard was completely farbot, but it started working on its own again, and a lot of my data was actually still there. Or, if the motherboard wasn't the problem, did he just give you back the old one (*doesn't really know too much about computers, hah*).

I'm really sorry this has happened, dear! *hugs* But at least you emailed a good deal of those pics to other people, as you said in your tweets. I know it's likely small consolation, but better some (even most) things lost than all of them. And hey, there was no reason for you to check the video card, so don't beat yourself up about it.

As for CM5... well, worst case scenario, there's always surfthechannel.com, right?

:( Yeah, what's sad is that if I'd known it was the video card, he wouldn't have had to do the recovery. But since he did the system recovery, the data got all deleted.

I'll live. I had a backup of a lot of things back in December, so it's just the past six months' worth of stuff I need to reacquire.

Oh, I'm so sorry this has happened. I know what it is to lose great parts of the fabric of your days, in graphics, in words. It's horrible, and I hope greatly that there is still a chance you'll recover most of your things.

I have gotten this program called dropbox, which stores all my most precious things, and I have another backup that does my whole computer, pics, stories, all of it, every time I change anything.

Computers are so reliable until they aren't and then...

Anyway, back to hoping you recover your fondest pieces.

I will definitely be looking into dropbox. What is the other backup? I keep thinking that someday I'll invest in one of those one-touch backup things, and I never do, and I really need to.

I was lucky enough to save a lot of my stuff, at least.

As I said on twitter--I'm so sorry and I know how you feel. My old computer had a habit of randomly shutting off--never did figure out why, but sometimes, when I turned it back on, it wouldn't work. So, I'd have to run the recovery disks. After losing a LOT of my stuff a couple of times, I got myself an external HD. And even with the new comp, still have switched a lot of it over.

As for the s5 eps, if you want them, I can find you links to d/l the eps, just say the word.

*hugs* Thanks. I have an external hard drive, and after my last hard drive failure, which was almost 10 years ago, I switched my music library over to the external. I just hadn't figured out how to make my internal TV tuner record to it. *sigh* I have the episodes backed up I believe through December, so I need to go see which ones I have to replace. I only need them until I get my DVDs anyway. LOL
